A couple of friends of mine went fishing at Loch Lomond yesterday for pike and coarse fish. They had plenty of action and caught a few trout about 1lb to 1.5lbs. They also caught what they were told was a Powen. They returned it as another fisherman said they were rare and more or less protected - is that correct ?
Anyway , the catch of the day was a Salmon ( 9-10lb ) on mackerel tail ! He was fishing for Pike but was gobsmacked to land that.

A few have been caught on mackerel and sand eels on lomond and a few rivers. But salmon anglers still believe they don't feed in fresh water when they pick up and swallow static dead baits ????

Powen are indeed a protected species. Its illegal to fish for them and if you get one by mistake it MUST be returned. You could not even put it in a keep net.

they are rare (in that they are only in a few waters) but very easy to catch!
